These symbols are a reflection of life today in Putins Russia for gay People. After passing the anti gay propaganda law was passed in June 2013 there has been a huge backlash in homophobic violence and hatred towards Homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals. Each symbol is either a direct action that has taken place or a reaction taken from comments made by government or political figures in Russia. They are made to feel familiar in a public space, clear to interpretation by a mass audience. As this law has effected everyone in Russia in some way. And as a way of interrupting normal signage with ugly images.
